Our Story

Exceeding Expectations, One Patient at a Time

In view of the commercialized Medical & Health Services, and exorbitant treatment expenses; Vikram Tirkey Foundation for Community Healthcare is one small step towards modelling a highly effective healthcare set-up… “Low Cost-Effective Care Services” with value for money – affordable to maximum.

Dr. Vikram Tirkey is a medical doctor (family physician) with extensive experience in the government and public sectors. Over the years, he has been deeply involved in mission work, serving in various capacities. He is widely recognized for his ability to collaborate and network with individuals and institutions across diverse sectors. His strengths lie in capacity building and empowering people to bring about significant transformations. Dr. Tirkey's life is dedicated to serving the poor and marginalized.

While working in a rural area, he had an encounter that profoundly impacted him. He recounts:

“A farmer admitted his critically ill wife, who was suffering from severe eclampsia, putting both her and her unborn child at risk. We performed an emergency procedure and did everything possible to save both the mother and the newborn male child, but the uncertainties were overwhelming.

The following day, the farmer admitted his elder son, who was suffering from severe cerebral malaria. Seeing his family members on the brink of death left him utterly shattered. Despite our efforts to provide maximum charity to cover the treatment costs, the ongoing expenses became unbearable for him.

A couple of days later, he returned to the hospital, weeping, carrying his bull that had been bitten by a cobra. He pleaded with us to treat the gasping animal. We tried to explain that we were neither trained nor equipped to treat animals, and the treatment cost, requiring numerous vials of anti-snake venom (ASV), would be prohibitively expensive. Additionally, three of his family members were still in critical condition, fighting for their lives.

He was inconsolable and could not accept our refusal. In his anguish, he remarked, ‘If my wife dies, I can remarry. If my children die, I can have more. But if my bull dies, we will all die because of the financial debts.

’It was the ploughing season, and the bull was essential for working in the fields.”

This incident, along with other observations, left a lasting impression on Dr. Tirkey. He recognized several critical issues in the healthcare system: the limited access to healthcare facilities in rural and underserved areas, the unreasonably high costs of medical treatments, and a disturbing undervaluation of human life compared to financial and material assets. The farmer's anguish revealed how poverty forces individuals to prioritize survival over the intrinsic value of human life, highlighting a tragic societal failure. This realization reshaped Dr. Tirkey’s understanding of healthcare and its broader social determinants. He became deeply committed to redefining healthcare to prioritize human dignity and equity, ensuring that no individual feels compelled to sacrifice their loved ones due to financial constraints.

The Vikram Tirkey Foundation for Community Healthcare is a micro-model initiative aimed at addressing these systemic flaws at a macro level. By providing cost-effective healthcare solutions and advocating for the value of human life, Dr. Tirkey continues his mission to serve the underprivileged, striving to create a meaningful and lasting impact on their lives.
